What it is

What Assisted Stretching Is, and Why It Reaches Further.

Assisted stretching is a thirty minute session in which a trained practitioner moves your limbs through their range of motion for you, using assisted static stretching and PNF (proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation, where you briefly push against the practitioner's hand, then relax so the muscle lengthens further). At Club 116 in Manhattan it costs $120 and needs no downtime.

When you stretch on your own, the muscle you are trying to lengthen is often also holding you up, so it never fully relaxes. On a table, with someone else holding the limb, it can. PNF adds a reflex: a muscle that has just contracted lets go a little further when it releases, and the practitioner uses that window. The result is a stretch you could not get to alone, and one that is oddly restful. It is not a treatment for an injury. If a joint is sharply painful or unstable, see the doctor first, and there is one down the corridor.

Who it is for

Tight hips and hamstrings from sitting. Stiff shoulders and a neck that has been holding a phone all day. People who train hard and skip the stretching, which is most people who train. Anyone over forty who has noticed the floor getting further away. Anyone who wants to feel longer and looser without having to do the work.

Why do it here

The practitioners work with athletes and with post procedure patients, so they know which joints to push and which to leave alone. You stay dressed, the room is private, and the session is shaped around what you told them at the start rather than a fixed sequence. A doctor is down the corridor if something needs a second look, and the sports massage, compression and sauna are on the same floor if you want to stack them.

What happens

Before, During and After.

Before
The consult

A few questions about what feels tight, what you train, what you do all day, and anything recent, from a procedure to a flight. If something hurts rather than feels tight, say so, because a stretch is the wrong tool for an injury. The session is shaped around the answers.

During · 30 min
In the room

You lie on a table in a private room, in clothes you can move in. The practitioner takes each joint through its range, holds each stretch, and for the PNF work asks you to push gently against their hand for a few seconds before relaxing deeper. Intensity is yours to set. It should feel like a strong stretch, never sharp.

After · no downtime
What to expect

Looser, lighter, taller, and usually a bit sleepy. Drink water and keep the evening easy. You can train the same day.

Results · weekly
When you see it

Better range the same day, which is easy to feel on the walk to the subway. Regular sessions change posture and comfort over a month. Skip a month back at a desk and the tightness returns, which is why members book it weekly.

Good to know

Downtime and aftercare

None beyond water and an easy evening. Occasional next day tenderness, the mild kind you get from a good stretch. Wear or bring leggings or shorts and a t-shirt; you stay dressed for the whole session.

Not for you if

You have a fever or an active infection, a recent clot or deep vein thrombosis, uncontrolled blood pressure, a fracture or acute injury in the area, or you are in the first trimester of pregnancy. Joints that have recently been operated on or dislocated are left alone until a doctor clears them. If you plan to add the sauna, note that it is not used with certain heart conditions or implants; we ask.

Members

Members pay $95, 20% off list, and the first signature facial is included when you join. Members tend to book this weekly, often back to back with a sports massage.

Questions

Assisted Stretching in NYC: Questions People Ask First.

How much does assisted stretching cost in NYC?

At Club 116 on Central Park South a thirty minute assisted stretching session is $120, and members pay $95. There is no consultation fee and no deposit to book. It is one of the lower priced items on the menu, which is deliberate: it works best as a habit.

How often should I get assisted stretching, and how long does it last?

Weekly is the sensible rhythm. Range of movement improves the same day; posture and everyday comfort change over about a month of regular sessions. The effect fades if you go back to ten hours in a chair and nothing else, so think of it as maintenance rather than a fix.

Does assisted stretching hurt?

No. It should feel like a strong, deep stretch, and you control how far it goes. A brief push against the practitioner's hand is part of the PNF technique and is not painful. If anything feels sharp, say so and the practitioner backs off.

What should I wear, and do I stay dressed?

Leggings or shorts and a t-shirt, anything you can move in. You stay fully dressed for the whole session, on a table in a private room.

Can I combine assisted stretching with a sports massage?

Yes, and many people do, one after the other in the same visit. Deep work first to release the tight bands, then stretching to use the new range. The recovery IV, compression and the sauna are on the same floor if you want a full recovery hour and a half.

Where is Club 116?

116 Central Park South, Suite 3, in Midtown Manhattan, three minutes from the N, Q, R and W at 57th Street. Open 8am to 8pm, Monday to Saturday, so a thirty minute session fits before the office.
